Thresholds of Transition
With: Mareo Rodriguez
It is an immersive installation that invites the viewer on a transformative journey through sound, reflection, and light. Inspired by the fifteenth-century Gothic architecture of La Capella, the work explores vulnerability, transformation, and the delicate interplay between light and darkness.
Pathway and Elements
Beginning – The Sound of Darkness
The experience opens in a darkened space filled with low-frequency sounds that resonate against the historic walls of La Capella. This sonic prelude sets a contemplative mood, encouraging introspection as visitors step into the unknown.
The Mirror-Water Pool
Emerging from the darkness, visitors encounter a tranquil pool of mirrored water. Symbolizing transformation, it operates as both a literal and metaphorical mirror, reflecting and amplifying the chapel’s Gothic architecture.
The Ramp – A Path toward Enlightenment
A ramp bisects the pool, guiding viewers toward a light sculpture positioned where the chapel’s altar once stood. This path signifies a journey from deep introspection toward illumination.
The Light Sculpture – The Crack
At the heart of the installation, a light sculpture in the shape of a crack embodies vulnerability and the surrender required for healing. High-frequency sounds fill this zone, heightening its ethereal quality and marking the passage from darkness into light. More than a rupture, the crack becomes an invitation into the unknown—a void suggesting that embracing our vulnerabilities can yield profound personal growth.
The Monolith – The Exit
Returning along the ramp, visitors meet a monolith displaying an audiovisual field of particles where the material dissolves into the ethereal. This final element culminates the immersive journey, symbolizing the perpetual flow and evolution of our inner and outer worlds.
Conceptual Framework
“Thresholds of Transition” challenges the notion of cracks as flaws to be hidden, presenting them instead as portals to deeper understanding and change. The installation celebrates the beauty and potential within these fissures, urging viewers to see beyond surfaces and embrace the strength embedded in vulnerability.
In the human condition, cracks mirror our wounds and inner shadows. When illuminated, they become healing light, underscoring vulnerability’s role in connecting us to our shared humanity. Together, the installation’s elements weave a narrative of introspection, acceptance, and a delicate balance between fragility and resilience.
Conclusion
“Thresholds of Transition” is more than an art installation; it’s a sensory journey housed within an architectural gem once destined to be a temple. It invites viewers to reassess imperfection, celebrate the interplay of opposing forces, and deepen their appreciation of the inherent beauty in our collective human experience. By embracing vulnerability and exploring the transformative power hidden in our shadows, we move closer to healing and evolution.
